Seller Guideline: Promotional Pricing & Messaging

Objective:

At Makro Marketplace, we want all sellers to market their products in a fair, transparent, and accurate way.

Makro Marketplace does not set any of the prices for sellers or place any parameters to sellers, however, sellers are required to set their own prices and any promotion thereof in compliance with the applicable Laws of South Africa.

This guideline helps you understand how to advertise discounts, and promotions correctly, so that customers can trust your offers, and you stay compliant with relevant Laws.

Our goal is simple: real deals, real value, and real trust.

✅ Do’s: Good Promotional Practices 🚫 Don’ts: Common Mistakes to Avoid
Use a “Was Price” only if the product was genuinely sold at that price for a reasonable period (we suggest 14 days or more).
- This creates credibility and avoids misleading customers.
Don’t inflate your “Was Price” or “original price” if the item was never sold at that amount.
- This is considered false advertising.
If using an RRP/List Price, make sure this is credible and valid
- This ensures your discount is genuine and legally defensible.
Don’t use fake discounts (e.g., “Save 50%” when your product did not cost that much).
- This is misleading to customers.
Make sure your “Save X%” or discount % is accurate.  
Clearly state promotion time frames (e.g., “Offer valid until 31 October”).  

🧾 Your responsibility as a seller:

All Sellers must ensure the following:

  • Every promotional price or message is accurate and valid
  • You can show evidence for previous or RRP prices when requested
  • You correct any misleading or incorrect information quickly
  • You comply with the Laws of South Africa and the Seller Agreement
  • You stay familiar with these guidelines as they may be updated periodically
